Creating: Finding the Beauty of Cards

I have to admit a social faux pas that I am guilty of on a regular basis- I frequently forget to send cards on special occasions. I mean, unless we are talking Christmas cards then odds are good I don’t even have stamps on hand because we pay all our bills online now. I can’t tell you how many times I know I’ve disappointed people because I am just really bad at this social gesture of kindness and thoughtfulness but two things have started to help me rehab myself out of card negligence.

First, my wonderful husband balances me in so many ways and this is one of them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wrapped a gift for a party or some occassion- especially before we were married and he would say.. um.. where’s the card? and my reply would usually be WHY do we need a card? I’ll just tell them it’s from me or write it on the bag or something.

It took me longer than I’m proud of to realize he probably wanted me to get him cards for things like Valentine’s Day or his birthday because he always got me one and is always excited to pick out cards for other people when we are attending a party.

Thanks to my friend Cara’s genius idea, our wedding invites became their own envelopes!

Second, after deciding to do a “Do It Together” wedding invitation, I started falling in love with making my own cards! After that I started using stamps and stickers to accompany bridal or baby shower gifts. And recently, I’ve started completely designing my own cards and loving the results. They are fun to personalize and a really nice way to add some extra beauty or humor into a special occasion.

Of course, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I am still woefully behind in sending cards through the mail, but I’m hoping with this newfound joy of creating unique greetings I will get better at marking special occasions or even just sending random cards to make people’s day! (Who doesn’t love getting something in the mail that’s not a bill or an ad?!)

I realized as I sat down to write this post that cards aren’t the only thing I’m behind on- there have been several crafts and cooking adventures that have gone undocumented the last few months. Sorry readers! I’m not even sure I’ll be catching up anytime soon but I’m hoping to get back on track with writing posts once or twice a week at least 🙂
