Well, here we are in August! June stretched on for what felt like years and then Buy seemed to fly by. It was really nice to have a writing break and focus on less screen time. I’m ready to be back to writing more though! Here’s a recap of July goals and what I’m planning to work on in August…
JULY MONTHLY GOALS:
*Declutter house and create more peaceful spaces: I made some major progress on closets, and bathrooms, but other areas still need some work…
*Schedule Sibling Time: More phone calls than usual and I’ve particularly enjoyed yoga over Zoom with one of my brothers! I can’t wait for this stupid pandemic to be over so we can start getting together in person more! Or even just for nice weather for some outdoor, socially distanced sibling time.
*Revisit Finance Goals and House Hunting Priorities: WE had some great talks about what needs to be our new game plan for the rest of the year and how unless we find something that seems perfect for us, we’ll probably be staying put in our current home longer than anticipated… trying not to be too bummed about the idea of our baby sharing our room for several more months instead of moving into a crib in another room… but, love grows well in little houses I’m told…
*MOPS retreat/contribution: It was rough to spend that long on Zoom, but mission accomplished! It’s going to be a crazy semester but I know we need each other’s support even more than usual.
*Plan for back to school: Bumped most of this goal to next month. School starts virtually on the 11th and before then we have a lot of work to do!
*Build Pumping stash: Did NOT do well on this but will try again next month!
JULY WEEKLY GOALS:
*Yogax2: YES! It is really hard for me to practice at home without distraction, BUT I could at least find twice a week to come to my mat and work, and I especially loved participating in my talented friend’s handstand challenge that got me catching some air time again- I forgot how GOOD it feels to go upside down!
*Budget Check in and Family Meeting: This went well. We did talk with the kids about some new responsibilities they have and are looking forward to solidifying them with our new school schedule.
*Date Night: We did this half the time. Which is better than none, especially given that they are all at home date nights right now…
*Sabbath and REST time: Did this about half the time as well and it really truly makes a HUGE difference in my mental health.
*Middle Child’s Baby Book: Nope. Once again this did not happen as I did not clear a good space for this to happen… noting this as a goal for the fall instead
*Project Life Pages/Legacy Journals: Finding a good rhythm here and really excited about documenting in these beautiful ways!
JULY DAILY GOALS:
*Hydrate/move my body: Hit and miss. And when I missed I was SUPER sluggish. But more hits than misses so calling this a win.
*Write the Word Journaling: YES! Pretty consistent with either actually doing a write the word journal or else a daily devotional. Rotating through four different journals so sometimes it feels like I’m never going to actually finish one, but since three of them are being done as love letters to my children, it is totally worth it!
*Sleep Hygiene: Hit and miss. Some truly terrible nights with very little sleep. But overall I’m getting better at forcing myself to choose sleep over accomplishing “just one more thing” or reading “just one more page…”
*Read Aloud: YES! The most successful daily goal this month was SUCH a pleasure! We read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe (using THIS old school edition that I read as a child… those of you unfamiliar with the series need only know there is a bit of debate about the correct order to read the books…) and we are about 1/3 of the way through The Mouse and the Motorcycle and I love how excited the kids get trying to guess what might happen next.
AUGUST MONTHLY GOALS:
*Set up School Space and Back to School Prep: Like most of the country, we are preparing to start the school year with virtual learning, and we may be doing it for a while. We need to set up a new learning space for our son where he will hopefully be a little less distracted by his sisters than the learning he was doing last spring in our front room. We need to figure out online registration at a new school and We need to figure out what the heck our fall schedule is going to look like between synchronous and asynchronous learning (we have no information on that yet… have I mentioned this whole year is making the planner in me suffer a million tortures?)
*Back to School Celebration/Establish New Routines: This got bumped from last month since we still don’t even have a lot of information about what school days are even going to look like. We definitely want to do our best to make it an exciting time though given how rough it was to end last year so abruptly and impersonally.
*Family Time Up North!: We cancelled all our vacation plans we had for the year– just like most of the rest of the world– so at least getting a little escape from the Phoenix heat for a day or two is going to be much needed before the school year starts.
*Plan for Hubby’s Birthday: My husband has his birthday the very beginning of September, so I need to do the planning for it this month. Obviously no party, but he really made my birthday special this year and I want to think of a way to return that and celebrate him.
*Continue to Declutter/Reorganize Office: The office is seriously the bane of my housekeeping existence and it’s not the office’s fault. We need to use it for SO MANY THINGS and this tiny room just can’t do it all. So the struggle continues until we find a new place. Things really do go better when this area is relatively under control though so it’s worth persisting.
AUGUST WEEKLY GOALS:
*Photo Routines/Project Life Pages: I have LOVED adding a weekly editorial/long form story page each week on top of the family yearbook pages I’ve been doing. I am still behind on purging my photo stream and sorting and organizing photos on our computer, but I’m at least keeping everything backed up and doing my project life pages and I want to keep that up- everything else is bonus.
*1 on 1 Time: Each family member is REALLY going to need this with all the changes coming this month.
*Media Free Mondays: OK, it won’t ALWAYS be on Mondays (ie this week I plan to take off Wednesday!) but I do want it to be a once a week goal and I can’t resist alliteration… and honestly starting the week this way is probably a good goal. No instagram, no news, no death and case count numbers from the department of health. I’m taking one day a week off this month and staying as screen free as possible aside from direct communication like phone calls/texting.
*Yoga x3: Two times a week was going well last month, I am ready to bump it up to three times a week!
*Budget Check In/ Family Meetings: The anchor to our weeks. This is truly habit by now, but I’ll probably keep it on my Powersheets through the end of the year.
*Finish Coursera Course: In an effort to find a state of flow each week and work on my mental health more- I signed up for a course on Coursera on the Science of Well Being which is kind of like the psychology of happiness. It has been SUPER interesting and motivating and I’m looking forward to finishing it and continuing to apply what I’ve learned.
AUGUST DAILY GOALS:
*Morning Routine: This will be changing as we move into the school year… I think the problem with this particular item is it keeps changing every few months, but similar to the office it is still worth TRYING to accomplish even though it feels a bit like a losing battle at the moment. Here’s hoping we find a little normalcy by 2021…
*Phone Limits/No Charging In Room: As I continue to struggle with getting enough sleep, this is the next step in my evening routine- After my limit/daily delete I am leaving my phone out of the room. I have the world’s cutest alarm waking me up every 2 hours anyway so I really don’t need my phone on my bedside table.
*Read Aloud: Hoping to finish up another book or two before the school year officially starts.
*August Arms: Weight training inside while it’s too hot to hit a certain stepcount/go running outside. I got some weights for my birthday and I haven’t been motivated to use them enough so doing an “arm challenge” alongside my yoga seems like a good match.
Looking forward to getting back to posting a bit more… depending on how school goes I may pull back a bit from my weekly posts but who knows, maybe this new season will bring a lot more writing than the start of the year… What is your fall looking like, friends?! How can I encourage you?
