In Praise of Disposable Cameras…

The single life event that is documented more than any other seems to be one’s wedding. I am kind of in love with our wedding photographs. We have canvas prints of some favorites on our gallery wall, I made shutterfly albums that contain many gorgeous pictures, and on top of that I still printed out hundreds of professional shots even though I have NO IDEA what I’m going to do with them (I think at the time maybe I thought I’d want my entire house to be decorated with wedding pictures? I was clearly not looking ahead to the fact that I’d want pictures from our marriage/family too..) And because our photographer was SO AMAZING (and also happens to be one of my incredible and closest friends) and we wanted to display her work throughout the house, I had kind of forgotten about this other stash of wedding photos I had until I was cleaning out our office… Continue reading

Baking #37: Sugar Cookies for a Sweet Celebration!

Aside from chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies are probably what I have baked the most in my life. Add some colorful sprinkles and they just scream simple delicious celebration to me! So I knew that was what I wanted to make last week to celebrate a day that has been a long time coming. Continue reading

Parenting questions that haunt me at night…

I remember getting a few strange responses when I started announcing my pregnancy to friends and family. In amongst the congratulations I had people ask me the following questions (could not make this up if I tried): Continue reading

Baking #24: High Tea and Scones

high tea

This was the magnificent spread of our high tea in London… obsessed!

I few weeks ago, I was invited over by a dear friend for a playmate and tea time. It was FABULOUS. She had these incredible “southern style” scones to go with it- more like biscuits actually and my son and I couldn’t stop eating them. Absolutely heavenly and I need to get that recipe! But in the days that followed I started missing London and more traditional scones. I went to London as a summer study abroad program when I was studying at Pepperdine and while there I got to go to high tea with one of my best friends. Hands down one of my top 10 favorite travel memories. Continue reading

How Linklater & Breathing Saved my Marriage

Pericles

Playing Hesperides in the production mentioned in this post… see where she comes, appareled like the spring…

I was introduced to Linklater voice work in the spring of my first year of graduate school. Everyone involved in the MFA production of Pericles needed to take an intensive workshop on it during what would have been our spring break otherwise (I believe our program director suggested that spring break was for “amateurs and undergrads”). This was important because Tina Packer and Dave Demke were directing and assistant directing and both came from Shakespeare & Company where Kristin Linklater’s work is used as a common vocabulary for such techniques as dropping in. I was a little sad that giving up spring break meant giving up some of the plans I’d made with my then boyfriend, now husband (we’d been dating 6 or 7 months at that point and one of our planned outings included wine tasting, which I was very sad to miss) but I was also excited and I had no idea how worth it that experience would be. Expressing gratitude for a blissful birthday

I have a confession to make- I’m kind of bi-polar about social media. I’m always trying it figure out how to use it well while falling prey to as few pitfalls as possible such as it becoming a crutch, a timesuck, or whirlpool of negativity. I, along with most people in my generation, am still negotiating how much the lives of myself and my family should be shared publicly and how much should stay private. I have gone through pages where I purged my Facebook friends count by over half- just across the board cuts. I’ve given up Facebook for a day, a month, a week at a time. I’ve had unplugged weekends and experimented with when I should and should not have my phone. I still have no concrete answers. But you know what I can’t fault the internet and social media for? Making a person feel pretty damn awesome and appreciated on their birthday. Continue reading
