Baking #24: High Tea and Scones

high tea

This was the magnificent spread of our high tea in London… obsessed!

I few weeks ago, I was invited over by a dear friend for a playmate and tea time. It was FABULOUS. She had these incredible “southern style” scones to go with it- more like biscuits actually and my son and I couldn’t stop eating them. Absolutely heavenly and I need to get that recipe! But in the days that followed I started missing London and more traditional scones. I went to London as a summer study abroad program when I was studying at Pepperdine and while there I got to go to high tea with one of my best friends. Hands down one of my top 10 favorite travel memories. Continue reading

Baking #22: Do you wanna bake a snowman?

IMG_4970My nephew came to visit us yesterday and surprised us by asking for a
blanket, some hot chocolate, and to watch the movie Elf. We live in Phoenix so this seemed a little crazy, but he told us he wanted to pretend it was Christmas so we decided to theme our whole day around Christmas in June. (Since we won’t be watching him in July this made perfect sense.) We were more than happy to accommodate with the movie because Elf is one of our all-time favorites. In fact, I watched Elf while I was in the hospital in labor. That’s how much we love it (and how much I wanted to laugh through my nerves about giving birth…) So we had hot chocolate (or a mocha in my case) and watched the movie and turned on the fans so that bundling up in blankets wouldn’t lead to heat exhaustion and had a great day. Baking # 21 Rosemary Bread

OK, after a month of celebrations and sweet treats, it is time to get back to some more savory baking selections. My brain is a little fried from this week, so finding inspiration for this week’s project was back to tried and true Pinterest searches. After scrolling through a staggering number of sweet breads, I saw a pin for rosemary bread I knew it was the winner. (We were reminded recently how much our family loves rosemary when a friend brought us some rosemary flavored nuts and rosemary crackers and we were instantly wondering where they’d been our whole life!) Baking #20: Happy Birthday Son, You’re 1!

So, of course I knew that this week’s baking project was going to have to be a cake of some sort for my sweet son’s birthday. But before we get to that, I want to talk about some of the other ways we celebrated, some of which were pretty standard, and some of which might be a little different. Continue reading

Baking #19: Homemade Graham Crackers

My son is a great eater. Thanks to Baby Led Weaning he has had the opportunity to taste a huge variety of flavors because we tend to eat a variety of flavors and what’s for dinner for us is for dinner for him. Of course, we have to adjust our usual spice level for his portions, because he is not up for spicy… but he loves spices and a variety of sweet, sour, and interesting food. Continue reading

Baking #18: Happy Anniversary Cake SMASH

photo 2

He was excited to finally cake smash…

So, I wasn’t originally going to write about this as my baking project, but after how much fun we had, I thought I should share. With how busy we’ve become since having a baby, we were fiercely protective of celebrating our anniversary. We even turned down jobs to keep the day open so we could celebrate together. However, while May 12th is our anniversary and my poor husband has SO many celebrations he has to make happen in May between birthdays and mother’s day etc. that we decided to stay home and celebrate with a home cooked meal. He did dinner and I did dessert. At our wedding we had some AMAZING cupcakes made by a dear friend and some truffles which were perfect for our celebration. We didn’t have a traditional wedding cake, and we did not Continue reading

Baking #17: Stress baking & chocolate chip muffins

“You should have a muffin. They’re really good and they’ll help you.”

I originally got into baking in college because it made me feel good when I was stressed. Instead of stress eating, I could bake and enjoy the smells of the treats in the oven and then know that I could easily give it away by just walking down to the callboard hallway and offering it to a ton of other stressed out exhausted theatre majors who had probably forgotten to eat most of the day after going from class to rehearsal to another rehearsal and back again. (In a lot of ways being a theatre major really prepared me for parenthood….) I actually started baking so much due to stress my senior year of undergrad that people started making jokes about the Grey’s Anatomy character Izzy Stevens- Continue reading

Baking #16: Already dreaming of Thanksgiving… Parmesan Cheesy rolls

My husband and I were sick last week, hence the lack of posts. It’s the first time we’ve been sick at the same time since the baby was born and boy was that a miserable experience. So we are still playing catch up but I wanted to get a blog in. I’m going to have to try to be short but I think this recipe needs a little background… Continue reading
